Technology and Ethical Social Work Practice

Course Description

With the rapid development of online social networking, videoconferencing, text-based therapy, mobile social work apps, cloud storage, electronic monitoring, social robots, and other forms of technology, social work practice faces exciting new opportunities as well as new ethical challenges. This workshop will provide participants with the latest ethical and practice guidance from the 2018 revisions to the “NASW Code of Ethics” and the “2017 Practice Standards on Social Work and Technology.” Participants will learn how to update their policies and practices in relation to technology and professional boundaries, dual relationships, informed consent, confidentiality, client diversity, and professional competence.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the potential benefits of using various forms of technology in social work practice.
  • Develop strategies for managing ethical risks pertaining to the use of technology, specifically in relation to informed consent, confidentiality, dual relationships, professional boundaries, client diversity, and professional competence.
  • Apply the new provisions of the NASW Code of Ethics in relation to the use of technology in social work practice.

Thank you to our sponsors and exhibitors!
