This presentation will present a broad overview of social media and how it impacts client relationships, as well as therapeutic work. Participants will explore how current codes of ethics can be applied to the professional use of social media. Vignettes and group discussion will allow participants to examine their own ethics concerning the use of social media in their helping roles.

About the presenters:
Dr. Jordan is an Assistant Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy in the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling at Appalachian State University. He is a licensed marriage and family therapist,  clinical member and approved supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.  Dr. Jordan specializes in work with low socio-economic status individuals, couples and families of color. His professional interests include relationships created through online video games and other social media, as well as African American male experiences in sports.

Lindy Russell currently works as an advocate at OASIS in Boone, and recently received her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with Concentrations in Expressive Arts and Body-Centered Therapy.   She has co-authored a paper with Dr. Jordan and has co-presented on various topics associated with social media and therapy.  Her professional interests include identity construction and performance--through social media, through real-life adornment, and through language.
