NASW-NC Asheville LPU Lunch and Learn: Narrative Therapy and Macro Practice

DESCRIPTION: Narrative therapy seeks to be a respectful, non-blaming approach to counseling and community work, which centers people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from people and assumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives.

Objectives

  • Understand post-structuralism and underpinnings of narrative therapy
  • Learn about three core ideas of narrative therapy and examples of how these ideas are applied
  • Examine how these ideas can be applied to the Macro and Clinical Practice of Social Work.

PRESENTER: Eric Wolf is a licensed, clinical, social worker. He enjoys conversations with people about their lived, storied experience. Using a form of therapy called Narrative Therapy, these conversations help folks examine their lives, make new discoveries, and remember their ethical guideposts.  Eric is enthusiastic about hearing people remember truths about themselves, the world, and their discoveries.

Educational honors include a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Cincinnati and a Master’s of Science degree in Education from Lesley University. He has over twenty year’s experience teaching environmental education to children and young adults.

Eric is also the host of the Art of Storytelling Podcast with 123 hours of online content. He is the winner of the 2009 National Oracle Award for Service from the National Storytelling Association

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY:

Dignity Period is our featured service organization for the October Lunch and Learn. See information below on Dignity PERIOD, and donate what you can by bringing items to the Lunch and Learn. A representative from Dignity Period will be present to accept donations.

Dignity PERIOD is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to provide feminine hygiene products to women and girls in Hendersonville and surrounding areas who might be homeless, low-income, or victims of domestic abuse.  Federal policy clearly states no non-food items can be purchased with food stamps, including feminine hygiene products.

Dignity PERIOD has identified 15 agencies and 30 schools for whom we plan to provide product based upon our current resources. Providing 5,375 tampons and 3,028 pads per month might serve the needs of as many as 569 women in our area for about six months.

We have to use our resources wisely, and the need is great. We have a wait-list of agencies we might help if more funds are made available us.   Dignity PERIOD can make a real difference in the lives of women at work and girls in school by preserving their dignity.  Our success is dependent upon caring individuals in our community for donations of cash and product.

Please contact Dignity PERIOD at dignityWNC@gmail.com or call (828) 697-2565. Find us on Facebook at dignity period Hendersonville.
