Event: Clinical Work with Trans* Clients

This two-hour presentation will explain the role of the therapist in working with trans clients, focusing on increasing clinical tools for improving services to this population. M. Avery Cook, LCSW will review the complicated historical relationship between the trans community and the mental health community and will share updated standards of care, DSM-V diagnostic differences, and common presenting issues. The presentation will also focus on elements of oppression and minority stress that can impact trans clients and ways to be more culturally aware when working with this population – including specific ways to be knowledgable, welcoming, affirming, and an advocate.

Learning Objectives:

·         Participants will establish a working knowledge of LGBTQ terminology and identities

·         Participants will identify clinical tools for improving services for LGBQ/T clients

·         Participants will be able to identify areas of minority stress that impact the trans population

 

Presenter information:

M. Avery Cook, MSW, LCSW, is the Clinical Coordinator at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Counseling and Wellness Services. There she provides individual therapy and assessment as well as crisis intervention and clinical consultation for providers and trainees on staff. Avery received her BA in English from Davidson College and her MSW from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Concentration in Mental Health.
