Presenter: Ronda D. Jones Tobey, LMHC, LCSW, LADC I, CADC

Mrs. Ronda D. Jones Tobey, LMHC, LCSW, MAC, LADC, CADC (Lumbee) has provided leadership and organization development to profit corporations, tribal government, and nonprofit agencies and serves as an advocate promoting native preservation for Native American families throughout the Eastern Region of United States. resides on Cape Cod, a member of the Lumbee Tribe, and is also married to a tribal advocate, former Vice Chairman Mr. Aaron Tobey, Jr. of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Ronda is a motivation speaker and trainer on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Harm Reduction Theory, Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), Native American Culture Competence and Ethnic Diversity, Historical Trauma, Human Trafficking, Appropriate Case Management to universities, colleges, conferences, government officials, and mainstream agencies. While living in New Jersey, Ronda obtained her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Rutgers University. She has been appointed by Governor Chafee of Rhode Island to the RI Board of Social Work Examiners. Mrs. Tobey is a former member of the Bourne School Committee. She is also President of Massachusetts Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (MAADAC). Ronda is the President of MAADAC’s Southeastern Region. Ronda is a License Mental Health Counselor, License Social Worker, Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), License Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor and Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor.


Ronda is the Clinician for Nonstock providing clinical services to individuals with disabilities and brain injury in the South Shore area of Massachusetts. She is a contractor for New York Indian Council (part of Rhode Island Indian Council) as the Clinical Supervisor for the Urban Indian Health Services in New York City and Interim Wellness Director. Ronda is also a founder and Chief Executive Director of Red Path, Inc which was NC’s first American Indian Child Placement Agency, former member of the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs: Standing Committee on Indian Child Welfare; appointed by the Speaker of North Carolina House of Representatives Joe Hackney, to act as a member to represent the Lumbee Tribe on the legislative committee focusing on American Indian Child Welfare.


Red Path provides life coach services, individual and family counseling, training and specializes in dual diagnosis and harm reduction services. Red Path is an anti-human trafficking agency that support Native Americans. Mrs. Tobey was honored as 2024 Massachusetts Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselor of the Year. Ronda has been nominated as National Counselor of the Year. Ronda is also the Co-Owner of Pembroke’s very own Bowwow Meow Pet Boutique. Mrs. Tobey is a former Miss Indian NC, born in North Carolina.

NASW-NC Orange County LPU Webinar: Psychiatric Advance Directives: An Ethical Approach to Supporting https://www.naswnc.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1847004 https://www.naswnc.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1847004 Topic: Psychiatric Advance Directives: An Ethical Approach to Supporting Autonomy and Self Determination in Mental Health Treatment

This presentation is an introduction to advance care planning in mental health treatment using psychiatric advance directives. These legal tools can be used by people who are in psychiatric treatment to plan for crisis, and to state preferences and consent for treatment in advance. Clinicians will increase knowledge of the historical and legal origins of these tools. They will also learn how to support their clients in creating psychiatric advance directives and learn how they can respond to them in crisis settings. The ethical principles of beneficence, autonomy, and justice will be reviewed in relation to preserving self-determination while balancing safety needs in psychiatric treatment.

 

Presenter: Bebe Smith, MSW, LCSW

Bebe Smith, MSW, LCSW is a clinical social worker, consultant, trainer and mental health advocate. Her clinical and educational work focuses on providing humane and evidence-based treatment and services to person who live with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. She is a former clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and social work at UNC at Chapel Hill. In 2005, she helped develop OASIS, the firs early psychosis program in NC. She was a founder and co-director of the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health from 2009-2012. From 2012-2015, she led a pilot of Critical Time Intervention(CTI), a team based intensive case management model for people with complex social needs. From 2017-2021, she served as mental health director and project coordinator for the Crisis Navigation Project at Southern Regional AHEC. She trains nationally and internationally in the CTI model and other psychosocial treatment approaches. She was the NASW-NC Social Worker of the Year in 2012 and won the Bryan Public Service Award at UNC in 2015. www.bebesmith.com
