The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) is the professional membership organization for social workers. Representing over 5,000 social work members NASW-NC works to advance, protect, and enhance the social work profession in North Carolina.
As such we ask that the North Carolina Department of Labor take necessary steps to investigate companies that do not pay their employees, ensure these employees get back pay, and put better policies in place to protect workers. The state must do more to better protect employees whose job it is to strengthen families in North Carolina. These employees often work in stressful, high-trauma positions often with low pay. Further, when mental health agencies are not paying employers, corresponding state departments like the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services need to be involved to ensure the appropriate leaders help take action against employers.
We trust the state to ensure worker rights to wages, fair representation, and to investigate harmful practices. Failure to do so is costing North Carolina workers undue mental health problems, crushing and sometimes debilitating debt, and an inability to effectively serve clients in need.
I'm glad that NASW is taking a stand re: this unconsciousable practice. It's hoped that other professional organizations will also take a stand and demand fair and equitable treatment for all employees. Employees expect more from NC Dept. of Labor.
