Membership CommitteeChair- Reta Johnson (rlwjohnson@mindspring.com) The Membership Committee focuses on membership recruitment and retention through such activities as calling lapsed members and new graduates. Committee members review and consult with NASW-NC staff on recruitment documents that they produce. Members assist in recruiting other members and spreading the word about NASW-NC activities. Most of the committee meetings are carried out through conference calls and e-mail. Legislative CommitteeChair-Sam Parker, MSW, ACSW, LCSW (sparker17@triad.rr.com) The Legislative Committee meets often in either face-to-face meetings or by conference call, and holds an annual retreat in conjunction with NC-PACE. The Legislative Committee recommends actions to be taken on legislative issues and assists with developing the NASW-NC Legislative Agenda. Committee members also follow through on calls for action by contacting legislators and spreading the word to other social workers. Committee members assist with any plans for lobby days, legislative conferences and legislative fund raising, and in reviewing and commenting on proposed legislation. NC-Political Action For Candidate Election (PACE)Chair-Dan Beerman (drbeerman@earthlink.net) NC-PACE is very structured by laws and policies. The committee recommends candidate endorsements, funding for endorsed candidates and levels of organizing for candidates races. The committee meets through conference calls and planned face-to-face meetings during election years. The committee also holds a joint yearly retreat with the Legislative Committee. Because of the specific structure and committee by-laws, this committee has few committee member openings. Recognition and Awards CommitteeChair-Gloria Cook, MSW (gloriacook@earthlink.net) The Recognition & Awards Committee is chaired by the NASW-NC Vice President and selects the Social Worker, Citizen and Agency of the Year for NASW-NC. The committee usually holds 2 conference calls during the year to discuss promotion of the nomination process and then to select the winners. Toby Brown Award CommitteeChair-Linda Williams, MSW (lrwilliams1@mindspring.com) This committee helps carry out solicitation of nominations, publicity surrounding the award winner and selection of the winner. The award provides $1,000 each year for an outstanding BSW graduate. Selection is based on academic excellence and outstanding work in the field placement. Presidents' Award CommitteeChair-Lavern Oxendine, MSW (MRLSO@aol.com) The Presidents' MSW Award was set up in recognition of and to honor NASW-NC presidents. This $1,000 award is provided each year to an MSW graduate who has shown outstanding leadership skills. Committee members will help to complete the design of the award materials and criteria, assist with fundraising for the award and select award winners. Finance CommitteeChair-Tina Souders, MSW, LCSW, JD (tsouders@email.unc.edu) This committee is chaired by the NASW-NC treasurer and meets by conference call six times a year, prior to each Board of Directors' meeting. The committee holds fiscal over-site for the Chapter and reviews the budget and makes recommendations for action and change. At the last conference call each year, the committee reviews draft budgets for the next year and makes recommendations for approval by the Board. The committee also reviews the Chapter audit. Ethics CommitteeChair-Ravita Omabu Okafor (naswncethics@bellsouth.net) The Ethics Committee is charged with investigating ethical complaints made against NASW-NC members. The committee has set guidelines and procedures that are developed by the National NASW office. Committee members can help draw attention to ethical issues through newsletter articles, etc. Clinical Social Work Summer Institute CommitteeChair-vacant This committee assists with the planning and development of the annual Clinical Social Work Summer Institute held at in Wilmington each July. Committee members meet via conference call and e-mail to select conference presenters, recommend potential sponsors and decide on the agenda and time frames. Committee members also volunteer during the conference. Fall Conference Planning CommitteeChair-vacant This committee assists with the planning and development of the annual Fall Conference. Committee members meet via conference call and e-mail to select conference presenters, recommend potential sponsors and decide on the agenda and time frames.
