Brain Based: Discover the Neuroscience of Trauma and Trauma Treatment

We now know that our brains are shaped by and for the environment, relationships, and experiences we find ourselves in. This has serious implications for children, adolescents, and adults exposed to toxic stress, trauma, and adversity. We also recognize that toxic stress, trauma, and adversity have the ability to impact brain development and function and are associated with behavioral, physical, and & psychological health effects, including mental illness. Due to the pervasiveness of trauma, it is paramount that clinicians have an understanding of what trauma is, how to identify it and how trauma impacts the brain as well as the individual’s ability to function. In addition, clinicians will benefit from learning different interventions that can facilitate positive trauma resolution, and how some of those interventions work within the brain to aid in the healing process.

Objectives

  • Participants will be able to learn how to define and identify trauma;
  • Participants will be able to discuss how trauma impacts the brain and an individual's ability to function;
  • Participants will be able to review how important research on trauma & resources can be applied in your clinical practice; and
  • Participants will be able to identify a variety of interventions that can be used in treatment of trauma.
