Learning Objectives:

  1. Provide a general overview of Brief Psychotherapy and how goal-setting is used as a Brief Therapy Intervention.
  2. Review case studies of goal-setting application in a Brief Counseling Context.
  3. Ethical implications for decision-making regarding scope of service, long-term referral, and the implications for social work practice.

Presenter Information:


Gene R. Edwards, Ph.D is a licensed psychologist and owner of Balanced Mindset Counseling and Psychological Services, PLLC. He is a generalist by practice and has acquired expertise and training in the areas of anxiety, stress management, depression, complex trauma, and culturally appropriate counseling interventions. He had provided training to beginning practicum, advanced practicum, pre-doctoral interns, post-doctoral residents, and other psychological/mental health professionals in the areas of multicultural psychology, social justice, personality disorders, couples counseling, and short-term solution-focused counseling. He enjoys working with adolescents (ages 13-18), young adults (18-24), adults (24+), military veterans, and high school/college/professional athletes. He is married with two children and lives in Concord, NC. In his personal time, he is a scholar and practitioner of various martial art systems.
