Program Description:  This 5.75 CEU training (4 hours of ethics) will provide LCSW’s and other licensed professionals an in-depth view of all of the essential ethical, clinical, business and risk management considerations necessary in order to develop and provide services to clients in a successful private practice.  The NASW Ethical Code will be clearly woven into the discussion and presentation in addition to the clinical, business and risk management considerations.

Schedule and Topics:

8 :30a -9:00a : Registration & Conversation & Coffee

9:00 - 10:00a: Nuts & Bolts- First steps-what do I have to do to get a practice going?  Rent, buy, sublet?  getting referrals; do I have to see everyone?; marketing and PR; what are people going to think of my office setting?; how do I handle crisis coverage?; can I have a sliding scale?; strategies to get on "closed" panels; ethical guidelines and considerations  (1 hour)

10:00 - 10:15a: Break

10:15 - 11:30a: Legal, Financial, and Risk Management- subpoenas; custody disputes; minors in treatment; who owns the records?; how does incorporation protect me legally & financially?; ethical guidelines and considerations  (1.25 hour)

11:30 – 12:30pm:  Lunch (included)  Q & A with Attorney Eddie S. Winstead, J.D.

12:30- 2:15pm: Critical  Documents- documents are contracts with your clients; outline of all paperwork needed to start and maintain a practice with emphasis on all necessary components of a Policies & Procedures document  that is clear and reflective of ethical and clinical best practice  (1.75 hours)

2:15p-2:30p:  Break

2:30 - 4:15p: Getting Paid & Staying in Business- understanding medical necessity; to accept insurance or not?; fee for service; critical fee collection must do's- issues of money, business, self- care, and codependency; billing software considerations; bill for yourself? outsource billing?; ethical guidelines and considerations  (1.75 hour)


Learning Objectives

Attendees will be familiar with the NASW Code of Ethics (and other Codes’ of Ethics) as it applies to all aspects of a private practice

Attendees will identify the steps they need to take to consider if private practice is for them

Attendees will identify the business, marketing and risk management considerations in embarking on private practice

Attendees will develop their own ‘first steps’ in beginning private practice
