Ethics Committee

 

The NASW-NC Chapter Ethics Committee is an NASW-mandated committee charged with processing ethical complaints filed against NASW members residing in North Carolina. This committee hears and determines the outcome of reported violations of the NASW Code of Ethics.

 

Also, this committee provides ethical consultation to members, promotes ethics education, and develops ethics resources for social workers. The Chapter Ethics Committee meets by conference call.

 

Your NASW-NC Chapter Ethics Committee offers peer ethical consultation to NASW-NC members. To submit your ethics questions call 800-280-6207 ext 300.  This service is a NASW-NC member benefit and your membership will be verified.

To Join this Committee

Any NASW-NC member with a social work degree from an accredited social work program is eligible to apply to serve on the committee. To apply, the member must submit a resume to the Ethics Committee Chairperson who contacts the member to explain committee functions and discuss the member’s interest. The chair presents the member’s credentials to the committee for a vote on admitting the member.  If the vote is affirmative, the chair forwards a request for approval to the NASW-NC Board of Directors. The individual may join the CEC after the board approves the application.  CEC members cannot be members of the chapter board of directors. Members who miss or fail to respond to notices of three consecutive meetings may be removed from the committee.

All CEC members must agree to:

·         serve a three-year term;

·         sign a confidentiality agreement to be kept on file at chapter office;

·         rotate responsibility for taking minutes as assigned by the chair each January;

·         remain neutral, objective, and professional.

 

CEC members who provide consultation services must have:

·        an MSW degree from an accredited social work program;

·        LCSW licensure OR substantial ethics experience as determined by the committee OR experience deemed equivalent by the committee;

·         at least five years post-master’s work experience;

·         no active or past licensure sanctions.
