Closing the Generation Gap

Students may be familiar with Grandma and Grandpa, but a class at NC State gives them a broader and deeper look at the lives of older adults.

 

The professor's initial question to her students is easy: What would you want in a room where you and your friends could hang out? The first two responses are phone chargers and free Internet. A couple of students suggest snack foods, prompting another to propose exercise equipment. Then Karen Bullock '90, chair of the Department of Social Work at NC State, asks what they would put in a room for older adults. After an awkward silence, someone finally suggests books and magazines. Another student proposes a recliner and a television. Then the students get on a roll. Hand rails, someone says. Nurses. Canes. Walkers.

 

Their responses prompt another question from Bullock. "I just asked you to outfit a room for older adults," she says. "For some reason you thought of older adults as frail. You said they needed nurses, canes, rails. Not all older adults are frail. Why is that your perception of older adults?"
