'We need to bring people together'

That was the mantra Saturday during the Organizing Against Racism Cumberland County Groundwater Training held on the campus of Methodist University.


Roughly 80 people, a racially diverse sampling from the community that included educators, law enforcement officers, civil rights leaders, religious representatives and everyday residents, attended the six-hour training program held in the Matthews Ministry Center that was meant to inform and educate people about the underlying root causes of racism.


“We need to bring people together to acknowledge the issue of racism ... ” said Carla Fagan, who is treasurer of Organizing Against Racism Cumberland County. “Because we need to celebrate our humanity and work toward the end to racism. We need to celebrate our differences and respect our differences so we can live together in peach and harmony. Our commitment is to social justice.”


Fagan, also chairwoman of the Social Work department at Methodist, was instrumental in organizing the event.
