Tiny Homes Village to provide housing for those with mental health conditions

For individuals with chronic mental health conditions, reliable and affordable housing can be hard to find.


For about four years now, Thava Mahadevan has been working with Amy Wilson, associate professor and social work researcher at the UNC School of Social Work, on the Tiny Homes Village project.


The goal of the project is to provide affordable, permanent tiny homes for people with mental illnesses and other health conditions living on a fixed income.


Recently, the UNC School of Social Work received a $1 million, two-year grant from the Oak Foundation to help fund the construction of the village. 


Wilson said this is the biggest grant the project has received to date. It will provide money toward what is called the horizontal construction phase, working on infrastructure needs for the village.
