Saving Lives While Saving Ourselves


The current suicide rate is now the highest recorded in 28 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 48,000 people died by suicide in the U.S. in 2017, and it’s estimated that 300-400 were physicians – one doctor suicide per day (CDC; American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). The stigma associated with suicide compounds the trauma of grief and loss, shaming victims (“survivors of suicide loss”) who are isolated in managing their tragedies. A vicious cycle of shame, depression, and suicide ensues with each death, perpetuating stigma and increasing the risk of suicide for family members, loved ones, and every community member.
