Practice Area Network-Disaster Response

Social workers are uniquely qualified to provide services in times of disaster.  Our educational background, ethical standards, sense of compassion, acceptance of differences and ability to work in all types of settings and conditions provides us with the mindset and abilities to handle disaster work.  Social workers can fill multiple roles during disasters, from management to mental health response. Indeed the American Red Cross has found that more social workers volunteer during times of disaster than those in any other profession.  We should be proud of that. There is a body of knowledge and level of expertise that is unique to disaster response. We encourage all social workers to take on line courses or attend workshops related to disaster response and dealing with trauma in order to build their knowledge base.
