Topic: Social Justice Implications for Clinical Practice

This presentation will provide an introduction to the integration of the social justice principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, intersectionality, power analysis, anti-racism, and anti-oppression into clinical social work practice. A case study format will be used to illustrate the application of each tenet. Participants are invited to engage in discussion and explore implications for their practice. Questions to consider in preparation for this learning experience include whether or how you consider any of the social justice principles in your current practice.

Presenter: Connie Perkins, DSW, LCSW, LISW-CP

Constance (Connie) Perkins is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with over 30 years of experience in school, hospital, and private practice settings. Connie received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Michigan State University, her Master of Social Work from Temple University with a concentration in Service Delivery, and her Doctor of Social Work from Simmons University with concentrations in Clinical Social Work, Leadership, and Teaching. Connie has provided clinical supervision to all levels of social work students and social workers pursuing licensure. Connie is passionate about social work and wants every social worker to be competent in working with complex populations. Connie believes that preparing social workers for social justice-informed clinical practice is an ethical imperative. Her approach to teaching and learning is to offer meaningful experiences that bring the content to life. Connie has created a course and professional development presentations on issues related to social justice in clinical practice and deconstructing evidence-based practices. Helping social workers advance their clinical skills is her commitment to our profession. In her spare time, she loves reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, sewing, and spending time with her family.
