Topic: The Science and Practice of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy for Mental Health Services: Healing Trauma Through Connection In this presentation, Terri Wilson, LCSW, LCAS, and veterinary social worker, explores the neuroscience, nervous system regulation, and relational applications of partnering with horses in clinical practice. Participants will gain insight into how equine-assisted therapy engages the nervous system, supports self-regulation, and fosters meaningful connection—offering an experiential, embodied complement to traditional talk therapy for trauma survivors seeking healing and resilience.
Presenter: Terri Wilson, LCSW, LCAS Terri Wilson, LCSW, LCAS, holds a certificate in Veterinary Social Work from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She entered the field of social work following undergraduate studies in animal science and a career in veterinary medicine, where she developed a deep appreciation for animal-assisted interventions and the healing power of the human–animal bond.
Terri has served in both public and private sectors as a therapist and substance use counselor, working in residential treatment programs, correctional and probation settings, and a domestic violence shelter. She now maintains a private practice while continuing part-time therapy work with parolees.
Specializing in Trauma-Focused Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (TFEAP), Terri supports individuals recovering from PTSD, complex PTSD, and relational trauma. She is trained in the trauma-informed Natural Lifemanship model of TFEAP and integrates Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing into her work.
Terri also serves on the board of a Montana nonprofit offering equine-assisted programming for active-duty service members and veterans. She partners with horses using neuroscience-informed approaches to help clients restore connection, regulation, and resilience. With a passion for bridging research and practice, she enjoys helping others understand how equine-assisted psychotherapy engages the nervous system and creates opportunities for embodied repair and healing.
