Topic: The Experience of Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

Ketamine-assisted therapy is gaining recognition as a groundbreaking intervention for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and other mental health conditions. This presentation will explore the therapeutic potential of ketamine, its mechanisms of action, and its integration into clinical practice. A unique aspect of this discussion will focus on the experiences of therapists who have undergone a full clinical ketamine session themselves, offering firsthand insights into its effects, therapeutic potential, and challenges in guiding clients through similar experiences.

We will discuss:
• The science behind ketamine’s impact on neuroplasticity and mental health
• The role of set, setting, and integration in maximizing therapeutic outcomes
• Ethical and clinical considerations for therapists using ketamine-assisted therapy
• First-person perspectives: How experiencing ketamine informs a therapist’s ability to support clients

Presenters: John Stowe, MS, LCMHCA; Cheryl Meola, PhD, and Susan Lally, MSN

John Stowe is a PhD student in Counselor Preparation and Research in the Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies at East Carolina University. Cheryl Meola is in private practice in Ayden, NC, and Susan Lally is a Clinical Associate Professor in the College of Nursing at ECU.
