Topic: Psychosis 101

Psychosis 101 is all about the signs and symptoms of emerging psychosis symptoms in youth and young adults.  In this presentation, we will be reviewing the biology behind psychosis, the stages of psychosis development, and clarifying what symptoms are considered psychotic—as well as which ones aren’t! We will also be discussing some basic differential diagnosis topics so that you can learn how to tell if psychosis is due to schizophrenia-spectrum disorders versus mood, personality, and substance use disorders or underlying medical conditions. Lastly, we will be discussing the importance of early intervention for first-episode psychosis, what resources are available throughout North Carolina, and how to make a timely referral so individuals can get support and begin their recovery journeys as quickly as possible.

Presenter: Whitney Rosenblatt, LCSWA, MSW, CPSS

Whitney has been working with youth and young adults for over a decade in Western North Carolina, first as a peer support specialist and now as an individual therapist with the AEGIS clinic! She has her own lived experience recovering from depression, anxiety, insomnia, substance use, trauma, and psychosis from a young age, and is passionate about helping clients build the skills necessary to transition well into adulthood while also learning how to manage their mental wellness. Whitney has been working to improve first-episode psychosis services here in WNC since 2020 through community needs assessments and advocacy, stakeholder education, and working on a team to develop and implement the region’s first FEP clinic, AEGIS, which opened its door in April 2023. She is excited to be able to provide regular educational opportunities to the community around psychosis and schizophrenia as a way to reduce stigma and increase the likelihood of affected young people being able to recover well and thrive as they transition into adulthood.
