During public comment period for prison rules- 10A NCAC 14J, NASW-NC joined our partners in our Prison Advisory Coalition to take the opportunity to further expand our efforts to improve conditions for inmates with mental illness and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Through our Coalition, we asked for the following changes to be made:

  • To include specific IDD screening to be administered upon entrance.
  • IDD and mental health screenings should be conducted by behavioral health or medical staff in a private area.
  • To increase supervision of inmates who are actively suicidal or who self-harm.
  • To improve facility conditions for inmates with disabilities and to reduce suicide hazards in cells.
  • To add Jail Suicide Prevention Training Programs.
