NASW-NC’s Political Action for Candidate Election Committee Endorses Three Social Workers for North Carolina State House of Representatives

Raleigh, N.C. - The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) Political Action for Candidate Election Committee supports the candidacy of social workers Graig Meyer, MaryAnn Black, and Sydney Batch for the North Carolina State House of Representatives.

Graig Meyer has served in the North Carolina House as the Representative for District 50 since 2013. As a social worker, his background is primarily in public schools where he spent sixteen years supporting students. During his time in office he has successfully passed legislation to help North Carolinians on a variety of issues including making it easier for families to set up guardianships for aging adults and helping families that have children with disabilities save money for care through adulthood.

MaryAnn Black has been serving in the NC House of Representatives for District 29 since being appointed by Governor Roy Cooper in the spring of 2017. Representative Black worked as a clinical social worker for over 30 years providing professional services to families in Durham. Most of her time in public office was spent as a Durham County Commissioner from 1990-2002. In 1994, Representative Black was named Social Worker of the Year by NASW-NC.

Running for her first term in the legislature is Sydney Batch from House District 37. Sydney is an attorney, degreed social worker, and child welfare advocate. She is a Certified Child Welfare Law Specialist by the National Association of Counsel for Children, a Certified Parent Coordinator, and a Pro Bono attorney for The Child’s Advocate, a project of Legal Aid of North Carolina.

NASW-NC’s Political Action for Candidate Election Committee has endorsed over 40 candidates for the upcoming midterm elections in North Carolina. These endorsements can be found at www.naswnc.org/page/2018PACE.
