Community Leader and LCSW Named NASW-NC 2019 Social Worker of the Year

(RALEIGH, NC) – The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) has named Jessica Holton the 2019 Social Worker of the Year.


The NASW-NC Social Worker of the Year Award is an annual award given to a social work professional who has demonstrated commendable social work practice and involvement with NASW and other professional, civic, and community organizations.


Ms. Holton has almost 20 years of experience in the field. She is an active member of NASW-NC and has been involved on the local, state, and national level. She joined the NASW-NC Board of Directors in 2005, served as the Co-Chair of the NASW-NC Greenville LPU from 2005 to 2012, was President of the NASW-NC Board of Directors from 2012 to 2014, was appointed to the NASW Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Specialty Practice Section from 2008-2018, and served on the NASW Delegate Assembly from 2011-2018. Ms. Holton is currently the Vice President of the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC) Board of Directors, as well as the Chair of the Professional Standards and Best Practices Committee. She also served for eight years on the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board.


Ms. Holton’s service extends outward, as she donates to scholarship opportunities that fund the work of her fellow social work professionals, provides pro bono hours of psychotherapy sessions for clients who are uninsured or underinsured, has worked with military veterans and their families, and participates in local river clean-up events. Ms. Holton is trained in critical incident stress management and disaster response, and as an animal-informed social worker, is the co-founder and facilitator of the Pet Loss & Grief Support Group in Greenville, NC. She also has worked extensively with the Wounded Warrior Project and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.


In recognition of her contributions to the profession, Ms. Holton has received unanimous praise from her colleagues and alma mater. Her honors include being named as an Eastern Carolina University 2018 40 Under 40 Leadership Awards recipient, as well as the East Carolina University School of Social Work Rising Star Alumni Award.


Kathy Boyd, former Executive Director of NASW-NC says, “Jessica is more than a rising star,” whose “work has had statewide impact for the social work profession.”


Ms. Holton will be honored as Social Worker of the Year at the 2019 NASW-NC Ethics Conference and Awards Luncheon on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the McKimmon Center.


The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) is a membership organization that promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers. NASW-NC also seeks to enhance the effective functioning and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities through its work and advocacy.
