Many of our members have reached out about concerns to connect to the North Carolina Health Information Exchange (NC HealthConnex).

NASW-NC has actively worked on legislation to get an extension and this bill was filed yesterday! House Bill 70 will delay behavioral health providers' connection until June 2021.

More about the requirement to connect

The North Carolina General Assembly created the North Carolina Health Information Exchange Authority (NC HIEA) to oversee and administer the state-designated HIE (NCGS 90-414.7). Shortly after, NASW-NC advocated to have the NC HIEA develop an behavioral health and I/DD workgroup. Since then, NASW-NC has come to the table to advocate for the needs of our members about this issue.

Licensed clinical social workers who see Medicaid, NC Health Choice, or State Health Plan patients are required to connect by June 1, 2019!

A large number of licensed behavioral health providers will be impacted by North Carolina’s requirement to connect to the North Carolina Health Information Exchange (NC HealthConnex) by June 2019 and this will have a negative effect on delivery of behavioral health services throughout our state.

For more information on this issue and it's importance, see NASW-NC's Policy Brief and a brief from the Professional Association Council which encompasses all the licensed behaivoral health providers in NC. NASW-NC's Director of Advocacy, Policy, and Legislation serves as chair to this Council.
