NASW Membership Dues Increase: FAQs

On July 1, 2019, NASW will increase membership dues for the first time in four years, by 5% across all member types.  This increase comes after careful review by NASW’s Board and staff leadership.

NASW provides a robust portfolio of valuable resources, including standards and practice information, legal and ethics guidance, social work news and journals, a network of 100,000 peers, a research library of 25 social science databases, and extensive continuing education resources.  In addition, NASW is your voice in Washington, D.C. and in state capitols nationwide, shaping sound social policies around the issues affecting you professionally, and impacting the populations you serve.  NASW works for social justice, and to ensure adequate and fair compensation for social workers. Your membership dues are a crucial investment in the causes you care about and in your own professional development.

NASW will increase membership dues, effective July 1, 2019.

Following are answers to some of the questions our members may have.

How much is the dues increase?

The NASW National Board of Directors approved a dues increase of 5% in all categories. The new annual membership rates are:

When will the membership dues change?

The new rates are effective July 1, 2019.  Members with expiration dates of June 30, 2019 or later, will see the new dues rates in their renewal notices beginning April 1, 2019.

Why does NASW need to increase dues now?

NASW has held dues rates steady for the past four years. During that time, NASW has developed new products and services for members and expanded our advocacy work, while costs have increased.  NASW remains committed to protecting social workers, advancing the profession of social work, and helping the clients that social workers serve. Membership dues make this work possible, and the association must implement a modest increase at this time.

How will I benefit from this additional investment?

Social workers are skilled professionals who want to make a difference.  Your NASW membership gives you access to the social work profession’s best minds and most trusted resources.  Your annual dues payment ensures the association is working for you at both state and national levels. We provide professional information, experiences and networks that help you grow as a leader in your professional community.  We are advocating for you in state legislatures and at the state licensing boards, and we’re in the halls of Congress working for you and your clients.  Together, we evidence a commitment to the highest standards of social work practice.  Your dues support these efforts.

What are my payment options this year?

Beginning April 1, in a limited time offer, NASW will provide payment options for members to have more flexibility in paying their dues:

  1. Pre-paid Installments. Since 2015, members have had an option to pay dues in three installments, in advance of their renewal date. Members who send a partial payment with their first notice will receive subsequent notices reflecting the credit and remaining balance. This option is available by mail to PO Box 79949, Baltimore, MD 21279-0949 or by phone, 800-742-4089.
  2. Pre-pay at the current 2019 Regular rate. Members who choose to lock in the current Regular dues rate may choose to pay any number of years of Regular dues in full by June 15, 2019, and will have their membership extended. This option is available by mail to PO Box 79949, Baltimore, MD 21279-0949 or by phone, 800-742-4089.

How do I send my payment?

  1. If you are not paying in installments, or prepaying next year’s dues at the current year's rate, you may join or renew online as usual at https://www.socialworkers.org/join.
