Update on Privilege License: Penalties and Back Taxes

NASW-NC has succeeded in advocating on behalf of the social work profession!

NASW-NC has confirmed with the North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) that because the Department has been giving LCSWs who practice independently incorrect information about the Privilege License, the NCDOR has agreed to issue an "abatement of penalty" to any LCSW who has already been practicing independently without their Privilege License. This means all penalties for not having had the Privilege License will be waived and back taxes will not be owed. Only taxes moving forward will be owed.

If you are a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and practice independently in the state of North Carolina, you need to obtain your Privilege License.

Will we be refunded if we have already paid the back taxes and penalties? Just sent a check last week.

Thank you Valerie. I attended the webinar and asked questions in the Chat about how far back we had to go to pay penalties for not having one, they couldn’t tell me, just that we would have to pay penalties and interest. We had a Privilege License from our County until receiving a letter in 2015 that the law had been repealed. We were never notified that the State started requiring one. We appreciate your work to correct this
