What happened to Nikole Hannah-Jones was racist. Period. The North Carolina legislature controlled by one political party appoints members to the UNC Board of Governors, and both that board and lawmakers select members for the UNC Board of Trustees, whose members do have a say in hiring decisions. In 2016, the legislature stripped Governor Cooper of his ability to appoint Board of Trustees members at individual universities. The legislature, instead of the governor, now appoints four members to the UNC Chapel Hill Board of Trustees. This display of blatant racism has brought shame on our great state. The lack of demographic and political diversity on the UNC Board of Trustees matters. Voting matters. Free and fair elections are essential to addressing and ending institutional racism.
