NASW-NC Condemns Hateful Language from Lt. Governor

As social workers, NASW-NC is appalled by the hateful language used by North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson recently and by his complete refusal to listen and learn from many individuals who have called him out for his comments over the years.

Social workers have a shared commitment to promoting laws, policies and programming that affirm, support, and value LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and communities. Politicians influence and set an example to many in our state and those with his misguided beliefs should have no place in elected office in North Carolina.

Social workers’ Code of Ethics states “Social workers should not practice, condone, facilitate, or collaborate with any form of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, or mental or physical ability.” Therefore, social workers uphold and stand with the LGBTQ+ community. Social workers can assist individuals in a variety of ways, from providing one-on-one counseling to fighting for equal laws for members of LGBTQ+ communities.

To the LGBTQ+ community in North Carolina, please know that you are worthy of love and support in our state, and that social workers are here for you!
