RALEIGH— During the upcoming Accessibility for All event, the state of North Carolina will honor the 33rd anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law on July 26, 1990.
The NC Assistive Technology Program’s virtual event on Thursday will feature presenters with disabilities who use assistive technology to stay engaged and included in their communities. The event is open to the public and will include a question-and-answer portion. It will include simultaneous interpretation in American Sign Language and Spanish, live captioning in both English and Spanish, and call-in audio description line for attendees with visual impairments.
Featured presenters include Brendon Hildreth who will discuss the Accessible Icon Project — an effort focused on rebranding the International Symbol of Access image. The familiar icon of a white figure in wheelchair on a blue square is familiar worldwide. The Accessible Icon Project seeks to update the image to portray the agency and vitality of people who are disabled.
This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the ADA, which was enacted to ensure people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The state of North Carolina works daily to ensure that the more than 1.3 million state residents who have a disability gain access to these rights and opportunities, independent living and economic self-sufficiency.
