NASW-NC Committees

Committees are a vital part of NASW-NC and are comprised of volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to the association. If you would like to learn more about a committee, please click on the names below to be referred to their webpages. All volunteer information is listed on each page if you would like to get involved!

Membership Department

Toby Brown Award Committee

This committee helps carry out fundraising efforts for the Award, solicitation of nominations, publicity surrounding the award winner and selection of the winner. The award provides $1,500 each year and 2 years of NASW membership for one outstanding BSW graduate. Selection is based on academic excellence and outstanding work in the field placement. (More information about the award and past winners can be found on this website by going to the section about the Toby Brown Award.)

Presidents' Award Committee

The Presidents' MSW Award was set up in recognition of and to honor NASW-NC Board presidents. This $1,000 award and 2 years of NASW membership is provided each year to one MSW graduate who has shown outstanding leadership skills in and outside of the classroom. Committee members will help with fund development and fundraising duties so as to ensure the continued existence of the Award. Additional responsibilities include recruitment of applicants and selection and recognition of the Award winner.

Membership Committee

The membership committee works to increase membership within NASW-NC by carrying out membership recruitment and retention activities. The committee may also serve as a sounding board and clearing house for NASW-NC staff, as they develop new membership benefits and concepts around recruitment and retention. NASW-NC members may volunteer to serve on the committee with no term limit. Interested parties can email membership.naswnc@socialworkers.org for more information!

Advocacy Department

Legislative Committee

The Legislative Committee meets often in either face-to-face meetings or by conference call. The committee communicates weekly through email. The Legislative Committee recommends actions to be taken on legislative issues and assists with developing the NASW-NC Legislative Agenda. Committee members also follow through on calls for action by contacting legislators and spreading the word to other social workers. Committee members assist with any plans for lobby days, legislative conferences and legislative fund raising, and in reviewing and commenting on proposed legislation. The committee also selects the Myrna Miller Wellons Advocacy Award winner annually.

NC-Political Action For Candidate Election (PACE)

NC-PACE is very structured by laws and policies. The committee recommends candidate endorsements, funding for endorsed candidates and levels of organizing for candidates races. The committee meets through conference calls and planned face-to-face meetings during election years. Because of the specific structure and committee by-laws, this committee has few committee member openings.

Professional Development Department

Continuing Education Committee

The purpose of the committee is to assist in selecting content for some of the major conferences NASW-NC offers.  As a team of professionals across the scope of Social Work practice, the Continuing Education Committee is vital in shaping the professionalism and knowledge base of social workers in North Carolina. Any NASW-NC Member may volunteer to serve on the committee with no term limit – student members and BSWs are also encouraged to join. Interested parties can reach out to education.naswnc@socialworkers.org

Peer Review Committee

Because NASW-NC champions the professional development of social workers, the chapter has developed a peer review committee in order to review courses submitted by organizations applying to the Continuing Education Approval/Endorsement Programs. Courses that receive the NASW-NC approval/endorsement will be sure to be ethical, relevant, and appropriate CE opportunities for social workers. To be considered for the peer review committee, one must hold a graduate degree in Social Work and have two years of post-LCSW clinical experience. Interested parties can reach out to education.naswnc@socialworkers.org

Ethics Committee

The NASW-NC Ethics Committee is charged with investigating ethical complaints made against NASW-NC members. The committee has set guidelines and procedures that are developed by the National NASW office. Committee members can help draw attention to ethical issues through newsletter articles, etc.

Equity and Inclusion Committee

The NASW-NC Equity and Inclusion Committee is charged to promote, value, and honor equity and inclusion within NASW-NC through education, policy development, and collaboration with other programs and committees. The Committee shall address issues affecting marginalized persons with whom the social work profession works including those institutions and agencies that serve them.
