Presented by: Donald McDonald, MSW, LCAS
We have five decades of research proving that addiction is a chronic brain disorder, not a moral
failing, yet we have been responding to it with the acute care model of addiction treatment and
incarceration. This workshop will provide education on the pathology and chronic nature of
substance use disorder. We explore the limitations of the acute care model of addiction
treatment and provide an overview of recovery oriented systems of care. We discuss the role
public perception and pejorative language play in discriminatory public health policy, and we
discuss strategies to improve the culture in our workplaces to promote help seeking and the
provision of excellent care.
