(RALEIGH, NC) – The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) has named Abrielle (Abby) Cozart as the recipient of the 2018 NASW-NC Toby Brown Award for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) undergraduate student for the 2017-2018 academic year. Abby will graduate with her BSW and as a Valedictorian from North Carolina State University.

The award recognizes a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student in North Carolina who best reflects and represents the ethics, values, and passion in the field of social work through exemplary performance in social work coursework, field placement, student social work associations, and community organizations.

Abby is an active member of her campus community, serving as Vice President of Phi Alpha National Honor Society for students of social work and as a member of the North Carolina State University Baccalaureate Student Social Work Association. On behalf of both organizations as a service fundraiser, she worked with fellow officers to organize an Easter Egg Extravaganza for families living at the Wake County Salvation Army Women and Children’s Shelter in March 2018.

Completing her BSW degree in three years, Abby has taken every opportunity to further her learning in preparation for her career. Abby is currently completing her field placement at the North Carolina State Veterans Home (NCSVH) in her hometown of Salisbury, NC. Abby went beyond expectations as an intern to provide an excellent level of care to Veterans. Abby’s field supervisor, Anna Whisenant, MSW, LCSW, says, Abby “truly cares for the Veterans she serves, and I know she will continue to take that compassion into her graduate school program and any population she serves in her future career.”

North Carolina State University BSW Field Coordinator Barbara Zelter, states Abby, “operates at the level of a seasoned MSW. Abby’s colleagues at NCSVH have raved about her contributions as a medical professional, her easy rapport with the elder veterans, her creativity, and her strong advocacy for the rights of the patients.” Interning with the NCSVH established her professional roots in rural North Carolina, where there are far fewer social work practitioners. Zelter states that bringing her social work skills back home is further evidence of Abby’s commitment, passion, and dedication.

According to Abby, “Social work is a vital profession, and I am proud that I have chosen a career where I will spend my life serving others.” Abby will be attending the Master of Social Work Program at Appalachian State University to focus on individual and family social work with the desire to continue serving Veterans.
