Myrna Miller Wellons Advocate of the Year Awarded to Miea Walker

The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) is proud to honor Miea Walker, MSW with the 2019 NASW-NC Myrna Miller Wellons Advocate of the Year Award. Ms. Walker was selected for this award by the NASW-NC Legislative Committee due to her passion and advocacy with clients impacted by the criminal justice system.

Ms. Walker is currently the Criminal Justice Manager at Forward Justice in Durham, North Carolina. Ms. Walker’s career as a social worker has always had a strong focus on advocating for those with a justice involved background.

Prior to her work at Forward Justice, Ms. Walker served as the Engagement Coordinator with Second Chance Alliance at the North Carolina Justice Center. She has also worked at Jobs For Life as a Training and Reentry Specialist.

To bring her work with clients to light, Ms. Walker has planned and hosted the Second Chance Advocacy Day at the North Carolina General Assembly for the past two years. This day brings over three hundred advocates to the legislature to speak with legislators about second chance hiring opportunities for justice involved individuals. Ms. Walker also currently serves on Governor Roy Cooper’s State Reentry Council Collaborative, a diversely represented Council established by the North Carolina Legislature to develop a statewide reentry action plan.

Nominated by fellow social worker and colleague Lucas Vrbsky, he said, “Miea is a fierce justice advocate whose passion is amplifying the voices of incarcerated men and women. She has experience with planning and development, shaping policy, advocacy and community organizing.”

Ms. Walker received her Master of Social Work from North Carolina State University in 2015.

She will receive the 2019 NASW-NC Myrna Miller Wellons Advocate of the Year Award at the NASW-NC Social Work Ethics Conference and Awards Luncheon on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh.
