(RALEIGH, NC) – The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) has named Douglas (Doug) Kim Bai as the recipient of the 2020 NASW-NC Toby Brown Award for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) undergraduate students for the 2019-2020 academic year. Doug is an outstanding student at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington (UNCW) and within his community.

The award recognizes a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student in North Carolina who best reflects and represents the ethics, values, and passion in the field of social work through exemplary performance in social work coursework, field placement, student social work associations, and community organizations.

Doug has been an active member of the UNCW campus community, serving as President of the Phi Alpha Honor Society for Social Work, Secretary of the Student Social Work Organization, Vice-President of the Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Society, and President of UNCW’s chapter of YouCanVote. The latter opportunity has had a strong impact on Doug. “Public engagement through political social work, attending city and town hall meetings, and advocating for social change have given me the courage to represent the values necessary to serve some of our most vulnerable populations.”

Doug’s BSW internship was at Elderhaus Incorporated in Wilmington, NC, a nonprofit organization for adults 55 years of age and older that promotes and sustains the independence of seniors wishing to remain safely in the community. Here, he has provided support and case management to older adults in a variety of areas. It is a population that he feels particularly drawn to helping, because of his own experiences of caring for an individual living with dementia. “Challenged by the psychological, emotional, and physical changes that dementia presents, I find myself more committed to work with older adults.”

Doug has proven himself to be a valuable addition to the Elderhaus team. When his internship was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Elderhaus offered him a part-time job so that he could continue to work directly with clients. His field instructor, Elderhaus PACE Center Manager Tracey Bass, BSW, says that Doug “has risen above and beyond the expectations of the learning contract and seeks to engage and learn as much as he can. I believe as Doug continues his social work education, he will continue to excel in his social work career, represent the profession with the utmost integrity, and be a strong advocate for social justice.” Doug will be continuing his education by attending the Advanced-Standing Master of Social Work Program at UNCW beginning summer 2020.

The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC) is a membership organization of professional social workers with over 4,800 members in North Carolina. NASW promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers. NASW-NC also seeks to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, and communities through its advocacy.
